How to apply for the window grant
Eight steps from checking your BER to getting paid, and the mistakes that cost people the grant.
windowgrants.ie is not SEAI or a government body and does not award grants.
Figures checked against seai.ie on 28 October 2026. How we check
Check the home qualifies, check the BER heat loss rating, get a price from an SEAI-registered contractor, apply to SEAI and get approval, have the work done, get the post-works BER, then claim.
Or let a One Stop Shop do the application for you. Either way, the grant must be approved before work starts (seai.ie).
Step by step: applying yourself
- Check the basics.Built and occupied before 2011, an MPRN, and single or older double glazing to replace.
- Check your BER.Find your BER and advisory report on the national register with your MPRN. You need Good or Very Good heat loss (HLI 2.3 or lower), or roof and walls already rated Good. No BER yet: book a BER assessor.
- Insulate first, if needed. If the heat loss rating isn't good enough, the attic or walls come first.
- Get a price.Use an SEAI-registered contractor. Get the window U-values (1.4 W/m²K or better) and the VAT in writing.
- Apply online and get approval.Apply for windows only, doors only, or both. Accept the grant offer before any work starts.
- Have the work done.Your SEAI-registered contractor fits the windows and doors.
- Post-works BER.A BER assessor rates the home after the work. This is grant-aided.
- Claim the grant.Submit the paperwork. SEAI pays you after the work.

The One Stop Shop route
A One Stop Shop applies for you and takes the grant off your price at the start. You still need a home that qualifies and passes the heat loss test. See One Stop Shop or apply yourself.
Mistakes that cost people the grant
- Starting before approval. No backdating. Start work first and you lose the grant. The only exception was for work ordered or started from 27 January 2026, before the scheme opened.
- Skipping the BER check. If the heat loss rating isn't good enough, the grant won't be paid.
- Using a contractor who isn't SEAI-registered. The grant needs an SEAI-registered contractor.
- Windows that miss the U-value. 1.4 W/m²K or better.
- Doing half the windows now and half later. The windows grant is once per property.
How long it takes
SEAI doesn't promise a time for approval or payment, and window companies often have a wait for manufacturing. Plan for the BER, the approval and the order to take some weeks, and don't book work until the grant is approved.
If your application is turned down
The usual reasons are the BER heat loss rating, a home built or first occupied from 2011, or work started before approval. If it's the heat loss rating, insulation can fix it, and you can apply again once the BER shows Good or Very Good. Ask SEAI for the reason before you change anything.
Where we fit in
We pass your request to one SEAI-registered contractor who covers your area. They give you the price you need for step four. windowgrants.ie is not SEAI or a government body and does not award grants.
