Window grants for over 66s

Two grants can help: your council's Housing Aid for Older People grant, and the SEAI windows and doors grant. Here's how each works.

windowgrants.ie is not SEAI or a government body and does not award grants.

Council figures checked against Dublin City Council's page on 28 October 2026. How we check

If you're 66 or over, your local council's Housing Aid for Older People grant can pay towards repairing or replacing windows and doors. It's means-tested: up to €10,700, and not available if household income is over €75,000 (Dublin City Council).

It's run by councils, not SEAI, and some councils have already used up their 2026 funding. You may also qualify for the SEAI grant, which has no age limit.

Housing Aid for Older People

The Housing Aid for Older People grant helps older people make necessary repairs to their homes. Dublin City Council lists the works it covers as roof repair or replacement, electrical upgrades, repair or replacement of doors and windows, and repairing or providing heating (Dublin City Council).

  • Generally for people aged 66 or over. Councils can make exceptions in hardship cases.
  • Means-tested on household income, after disregards and deductions.
  • No grant where household income is over €75,000.
  • Up to €10,700, or 100% of the approved cost, whichever is less.
  • Apply to your own county or city council.

How much you could get

The grant falls as household income rises. These are the bands on Dublin City Council's page (Dublin City Council, checked 28 October 2026):

Household incomeShare of costMaximum grant
Up to €37,500100%€10,700
€37,501 to €43,75085%€9,095
€43,751 to €50,00075%€8,025
€50,001 to €62,50050%€5,350
€62,501 to €75,00030%€3,210
Over €75,000No grant–

One passage on the same Dublin City Council page still gives €8,000 as the most you can get. Its income table uses €10,700. Ask your council which applies.

Income is the household's for the previous tax year, with disregards and deductions applied. Your council works it out from your application.

Some councils have run out of 2026 funding

Council budgets for this grant are limited. Kildare County Council, for example, says its Housing Aid for Older People grant "has now reached its funding threshold for 2026 and is therefore closed to new applications", and it can only take emergency applications (Kildare County Council). Check your own council's page or ring their housing grants team before you plan around it.

The Housing Adaptation Grant is different

The Housing Adaptation Grant for People with a Disability is for works that make a home suitable for someone with a disability, such as access ramps, a downstairs toilet, stair-lifts, hoists and accessible showers (Kildare County Council). It isn't a general window upgrade grant.

The SEAI grant has no age limit

Separately, the SEAI windows and doors grant is open to any eligible home built and occupied before 2011, whatever your age. It pays €1,500 to €4,000 for windows by home type, plus €800 per door for up to two. The rules are on window grant eligibility.

Ask your council and SEAI before you apply for both on the same windows. Don't assume you can claim twice for the same work.

What we can do

We can pass your request to one SEAI-registered contractor who covers your area for a price. The council grant is applied for through your council directly. We don't handle council grants.

Questions people ask

Is there a window grant for over 66s?

Yes. Your council's Housing Aid for Older People grant can pay towards repairing or replacing windows and doors. It's means-tested, up to €10,700, and not available if household income is over €75,000.

Can I get the SEAI grant if I'm over 66?

Yes. The SEAI windows and doors grant has no age limit. The home must be built and occupied before 2011 and pass the BER heat loss test.

Why did my council say the grant is closed?

Councils have limited budgets. Some, like Kildare, have used up their 2026 Housing Aid for Older People funding and only take emergency applications.

How do I apply for Housing Aid for Older People?

Through your own county or city council's housing grants section. Each council publishes its application form and a list of what to send with it, so read that list before you apply.

Is the Housing Adaptation Grant for windows?

Not generally. It's for adaptations that make a home suitable for a person with a disability, such as ramps, stair-lifts and accessible showers.
